The exhibition Social Distancing responds to the current coronavirus pandemic, which has affected every one of us. At some point, the initial solidarity was replaced by aggression, which stemmed from long-term stress and tension in society. Every one of us was a potential danger for someone else. The boundaries of social distancing during the pandemic were explored. At the same time, it has become clear that, as a precaution, it is necessary to maintain a physical distance, but always with a certain amount of readiness for social solidarity. This was the assignment for my students as part of my online teaching at the Faculty of Art and Design of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. The exhibited artworks are a selection of artworks my students sent me. They all were created during the quarantine and they all have a unique sense of "another reality."
Klára Kelovská was doing her internship in Valencia, Spain, when the pandemic started. Her evacuation logically evoked a lot of emotions in her. Fear, a sense of adventure and social deprivation from isolation thus gave birth to her exhibited paintings. The coronavirus symbolism is interwoven with fragments of human nature. A face with a mask or rubber gloves will clearly go down in human history for the year 2020, as will the moment of forced shutdown and reassessment of our often frantic pace of life. The current exhibition also presents the animation of the CzechKazakh artist Perizat Gabdulakhmet, which overall complements the exhibition and points out the ironic moments of the forced quarantine. Klára Kelovská is a student at the Digital Media Studio; Perizat Gabdulakhmet studied at the Glass Studio and is currently studying Interactive Media. The exhibition is a reflection of the past weeks and was created unexpectedly outside the exhibition plan, but continues to follow the curatorial focus on budding artists and contemporary drawing, which is present in both paintings and animation.
